A Short Distance and a Long Trip
Look at a map and Fishers Island seems easy. It sits a few miles off the tip of the North Fork.
Getting there is another story. The public route runs from New London, Connecticut. From Long Island that means driving to Orient Point first. Then a ferry across the Sound. Then a second ferry to the island. Half a day gone, before you have done anything.
That detour is the single thing most first-time visitors underestimate.
The Island is New York, Even if the Route is Connecticut
This confuses people constantly. Fishers Island is part of the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York. It is a little over four square miles and has a small year-round population.
The Town of Southold’s Fishers Island page is the place to check for anything official, from local committees to town services. Worth a look if you are planning more than a day trip.
The public ferry district was created by the state legislature in 1947. It runs year-round to the Connecticut mainland. That is the route the schedule is built around. It is also why the trip from Long Island feels backwards.
What a Sag Harbor Departure Changes
Some East End operators run private crossings straight from Sag Harbor. That cuts the Connecticut leg out entirely.
Yacht Hampton offers three versions of this. The differences matter before you book. One is a standard crossing shared with other travellers. One is a private on-demand charter for your group alone. The third is a dedicated run for Fishers Island Club guests, timed around tee times and set up for golf bags.
The trips leave from a private marina at 9 Long Wharf in Sag Harbor, and every crossing runs with a USCG-licensed captain.
Which One you Actually Need
The shared crossing suits a solo traveller or a day-tripper with a fixed plan. You are on someone else’s departure time, which is fine if your day is simple.
The private charter suits families and second-homeowners. The real value is flexibility. If your plans shift by an hour, a private booking absorbs that. A fixed crossing does not.
The golf-specific option is narrower. It exists because the Fishers Island Club runs roughly May through October and tee times do not move for ferry schedules. If arrival timing is the deciding factor, that is the one to ask about.
Practical Notes before You Go
Fishers Island has limited services and no bridge. On-island transport is a separate arrangement from the crossing. Sort that out in advance, not on arrival.
Bring what you need. This is not a place to run out and buy something you forgot.
Check the weather the day before, not the morning of. The crossing runs through open water. Conditions on the Sound shift faster than they do inside the bays.
Worth the Trip
Fishers Island stays quiet in a way most of the East End stopped being decades ago. That is the appeal, and it survives partly because getting there is inconvenient.
A direct crossing removes most of that inconvenience. The quiet stays. If that sounds like your kind of day, booking calls go to 631-500-7777. Ask which of the three crossing types fits your plans.
